Apart from those times when I was either painfully aware of the "and now I will teach Americans about _____" stance of the author, or when I was irritated at the predictable plot, I truly enjoyed the book. Overall, a well-told story.

I have no clue how I chose this one off the library shelf, and didn't expect to like this as much as I did. Hey, the future could happen this way: Mad Max meets Laura Ingalls Wilder and Huck Finn.

While the strength of TCIOTDITN is the voice of the protagonist, getting inside the heads of each Hall family member in this book was neither as fun nor as interesting. I suspect the idea was to bear witness as all of them mess up their love lives in...more

Ok, so it's not PD James level. The beginning dragged a bit, but there were some unexpected plot twists and interesting family dynamics, which I appreciated. I was happy to spend time with my nose in this one, but won't go and buy extra copies to pre...more

Ok, I'm a cognitive science geek, and thoroughly enjoyed this. I don't always agree with Pinker, but I do appreciate his clarity and his sense of humor. And a book with a chapter about swearing is always appreciated.

On the whole, I liked the way Sasha Goldberg's travels allow us to experience small-town Siberia, the life of a mail-order bride, Americans trying rescue Soviet Jews, and so on, but at times it felt like the author was going down a checklist of "comp...more

I'd been meaning to read this for a while, and man, I am SO disappointed. If I could extract the style of writing from the story in some magical way, say, a sentence here or a paragraph there, I would have liked it. But instead, each plot development...more
