I put off reading this book because I expected not to like it. Then curiosity got the better of me and I borrowed a copy. To my pleasant surprise, I really liked the opening story, "The Shared Patio." It was strange, the character makes bad decisions, and July has that talent of allowing her characters to say things out loud that other people only think. She seems like a brave and honest writer.

Unfortunately, as I kept reading, I wasn't as wowed. Her style made the stories, from one to the next, sound and seem very similar, and I began to lose interest. The writing is clean and strong, though. Her metaphors and similes are well chosen and well placed.

I couldn't remember the name of the James Salter book you told me, but I was in Green Apple a few days ago and this was the only one they had. And really cheap ($5) so I bought it and I am loving it!!

Disclaimer: I know the author of this book; she was one of my teachers in graduate school.

Having heard about this novel while still in draft form, and having previously read Payne's "The Virgin's Knot," I was very much looking forward to the publication of "Kingdom of Simplicity."

Both of the aforementioned novels contain protagonists who are in some way physically disabled, and who also have special gifts. While I very much enjoyed "The Virgin's Knot," I was moved and compelled by "Kingdom of Simplicity" - in part because the view into the Amish community was fascinating. Eli Yoder, nicknamed Big Ugly, spends most of the novel in his rumspringa years - when he can choose to go out into the wider world, or to get baptized into the Amish way of life. He is an apt narrator because he actively observes and questions everything he knows about life and spirituality.

The book is about forgiveness and reaches some heartfelt conclusions. Structurally it's broken into 5 parts, and then into chapters within each part. I will say that Part 1 blew my mind. I had to put the book down for a week after I finished it; the events that shaped Eli and his family as a child are hard to read. Once I was ready, the novel was easy to pick back up. Certain characters really jumped off the page, and at times when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, the book would turn quietly and unexpectedly in another direction. You want to shake Eli's character sometimes, but he is consistent, and nothing if not earnest, and genuine, and sweetly vulnerable.
