Pamela and 6 other people liked Ron Charles's review of The Master:
The Master by Colm Tóibín
"In "The Art of Fiction," Henry James advises the beginning novelist, "Try to be one of the people on whom nothing is lost!" Unfortunately, much of James's insight is now lost on us. He grows more revered and unread with each passing decade. Shifti..." Read more of this review »
The History of Danish Dreams by Peter Høeg
"I don't have much to say about this novel. I think I enjoyed it because it held me hostage most of the fall and winter - a type of literary Stockholm Syndrome. It was funny and absurd at times, with ridiculous, larger than life characters. In the..." Read more of this review »

Powerful, rich, and meaty. Hard to write a quick, few line review of such a collection!

Oates states at the outset that she deliberately chose for this compilation stories by generally well-known authors that are not as often anthologized as others.
Pamela and 1 other person liked Ron Charles's review of The Beginner's Goodbye:
The Beginner's Goodbye by Anne Tyler
"The opening line of Anne Tyler’s 19th novel is self-consciously clever: “The strangest thing about my wife’s return from the dead was how other people reacted.” For a few pages, “The Beginner’s Goodbye” sounds like the sort of droll story Jose Sar..." Read more of this review »

Marcus Aurelius
“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Alice Munro
“She would live now, not read.”
Alice Munro, Dear Life: Stories

Shunryu Suzuki
“I discovered that it is necessary, absolutely necessary, to believe in nothing. That is, we have to believe in something which has no form and no color--something which exists before all forms and colors appear... No matter what god or doctrine you believe in, if you become attached to it, your belief will be based more or less on a self-centered idea.”
Shunryu Suzuki

Eudora Welty
“There is absolutely everything in great fiction but a clear answer.”
Eudora Welty

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
“The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers & cities; but to know someone who thinks & feels with us, & who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
