Great review! I read the first one and had a hard time remembering it twelve hours after finishing it. I keep meaning to go on to the second one, but it's hard to get going on a series that I can see will disappoint me later. :-/

I'm not really sure why I read this series anymore. The actual mystery of the novel is shoved aside for the better part of the book to make way for arguing, sex, and pissing contests. And if it's not that then the rest of the book is made up of hair and eye color descriptions for all the various characters. Hamilton's fascination with hair down to the ankles and with the varying heights of the characters is mind-boggling. She seems to spend more time thinking up these various combinations than actually working on the plot.

Merry's decided she's going to be a detective now that she's been exiled to California. She gets called in to help the police with a case where faeries are being murdered and arranged and posed to look like pages out of a fairy tale book. Merry's men don't want her to get too involved since she's pregnant, but Merry is stubborn and wants to know who's killing her people. About 250 pages go by after this initial setup and we arrive at the conclusion of the story. The mystery is figured out and wrapped up within the last 30 pages or so. Just about everything that happens in between is either a rehash of old events, pissing contests between the men, or Merry running around trying not to get herself killed.

Doyle and Frost, Merry's two main men are little more than bodyguards in this book. She doesn't sleep with them and Frost barely says a word at all. Doyle's main phrase throughout the book is; "Once I was the Queen's Darkness ..." while Frost's phrase is; "I was once the Killing Frost ..." They both like to wax poetic on how badass they used to be but it just seems silly now. It's gotten to the point where I honestly like Sholto better, his character is more developed and he actually has a personality. Doyle and Frost seem castrated and I've grown bored with them.

My biggest problem with this book though is the repetition and constant explanations that are unnecessary and bog the book down. There are so many phrases and scenes in this book that feel lifted from the previous novels that at times it feels like Hamilton copied and pasted to fill up the pages. There would be times when someone would say or do something wrong and this would be pointed out to the reader and then someone would say, "what did I miss, why is that wrong?" and then it'd be explained.

Then, if things weren't being explained constantly, Merry was arguing with her men about who was in charge. And if Merry wasn't arguing about who was in charge then the men were arguing with each other. I don't know why Hamilton thinks this moves the plot along because it doesn't. It's frustrating to say the least.

The men Merry sleeps with in this book are mostly secondary characters and it's gotten to the point where it just doesn't make sense anymore. She claims to love Doyle and Frost as her main men but hardly spends any time with them. She's pregnant now so she doesn't have to whore around so much but she chooses to anyway and I don't see the reason for this other than Hamilton wanting to write all the different and strange sex scenes. I have to say that probably without the sex scenes this book would be even weaker than it was though.

This series has so much potential and each book it just seems to be wasted. The main mystery is forgotten for most of the book and then neatly wrapped up within the last few pages. Hamilton's writing suffers more and more with each book and she could really benefit from a new editor, or maybe even a break from writing all together. I'm mostly disappointed because I thought Swallowing Darkness was actually a step-up from the previous books, but now it seems like that was just an anomaly. I honestly don't know if Hamilton will ever change her writing though, because she does sell her books. I can hope though.(less)

I like this series. Much of it stretches belief, but it's suspenseful, romantic and exciting, so I can handle that.

This third installment had a few problems for me, though. To be honest, I was disappointed with the sex. No, not because there wasn't enough of it. Because it was there. It seemed wrong in the context and I thought the hero should have waited until there were no secrets between them. It took some of the romance away and felt like it was the author fulfilling a quota.

The story line was creepy, which was a good thing, but recovery from some experiences seemed pretty farfetched. That's a little pet peeve of mine. I really can't see any of these people going on to live anything even close to a normal life after what happened to them, particularly the chemical effects and head games. Again, I'm willing to suspend disbelief, but I know that whenever I see those characters in future installments (if there are any), I'm going to think "that one's going to go off one day."

In any case, Ethan and Shea are a nice couple. Ethan is a good, tortured hero. The reveal of their pasts is done well and the story is put together nicely.

I think what I like most about this series is that the books have a structure that feels a little different from what I'm used to. She has been using the same template, though, and it would be nice to see the next one shake that up a little bit.

So, in closing, I recommend this series. It's not anything totally new, but the action is well-described and exciting, the romance is believable and the heroes and heroines are likable. I think people will enjoy it.

I enjoyed reading this book. It's not as light-hearted as what I've been reading the past week, but it's a pretty good angst/love story.

The last few chapters are absurd, however, for the TSTL, knee-jerk actions of the protagonists, and that was annoying. It seemed like neither had learned a thing in all the drama of their lives. Rather immature behavior, as well as extremely hurtful. And could have been solved by a couple of questions and even moderately cool heads.

Still, I was rooting for the couple and the action was good. The set up for a series was effective and I've already started the next installment.

So, I recommend it, but don't look for anything new. In fact, the whole misunderstanding/rash response is one of the oldest tricks in the romance category so be prepared. Good chemistry between the main characters saves the book, and makes me recommend it.

This one lives up to the hype. A very good, romantic story in a unique setting.

I love historical romance, and I'm not bothered by the typical locations/time frames. I like Regencies just fine, for example. But this story is set in the colonial American frontier and has a real "Last of the Mohicans" vibe, which is really a refreshing change. And, no, the hero wasn't a secret duke, either.

Iain MacKinnon and Lady Anne Campbell are really nice leads. I liked the way their romance progressed, although it certainly happened quickly. Their chemistry was very good and their moments of mistake and/or misunderstanding were not TSTL, but usually manipulated by an outside force, or by their own desire to save the other pain.

The featured and side characters were very good. The villain was awful and nasty and dealt with nicely. There's an anti-hero that I want to hate, but Clare keeps pulling the rug out from under that one, and I really don't know what to expect from him in the future. Which is a good thing, I think.

I did have a problem with a couple of parts. There was something in particular that Iain did that I thought was not a good plan, considering the laws and his desire to protect Annie. But it was a minor speed bump, really.

The battle scenes were difficult to read, mainly because they were well-told. A horrible loss due to an arrogant general -- I just wanted to reach through the pages and strangle the man myself.

My biggest problem with this book is not at all the fault of the author or the story. It's the Kindle version. There was a typo in every other paragraph, I swear. Misspelled words and missing or misplaced punctuation. How am I supposed to keep my mind on the story if I'm translating the whole time. What does "recatt" mean? Well, it means "recall" when spelled properly. So many things were like that. The most annoying one was the word "lain". Consistently it was replaced with the hero's name: "Iain". You look at them here and say -- why would that bother her? Well, the font doesn't make the "i" and the "L" look the same, so it's very clearly the man's name rather than a version of "lay". Okay -- that was a rant. But seriously, you could probably make a comedy album reading the typos in this thing. Shoddy, shoddy work.

However, the story surpasses that problem and I don't know if the PB is typo-riddled, so you might consider buying that if you think translating occasional nonsense words might bother you.

Now, I'm on to the next in the series, "Untamed", and looking forward to it.

ETA: The reason I didn't give this one five stars was because of the odd blip I mentioned above and also because I thought she padded the story with a few unnecessary sex scenes. They're well written, but a couple of them are unnecessary, and I actually skimmed over them. I can think of two that truly enhanced the story, but the others, IMO, were superfluous.

I really liked this story. Morgan and Amalie are great leads, even though I sometimes worried she was going to become TSTL or mewling. She didn't. She reasoned things out and came to correct conclusions almost every time. And had incredible faith in Morgan.

Usually I know pretty much how a story is going to work itself out. There may be a few surprises here and there, but mostly I know the path it's going to go. I really didn't know what was going to happen next with this, and yet, every part of the story was organic. One thing led logically to the next, even though I couldn't predict each step. It was nice to see that, since romance writers often think they're 'changing things up' when they add in bizarre plot twists. Often the most believable thing can still be surprising and it's always the most satisfying.

I liked revisiting the other characters. Connor, Wentworth, Iain, Annie, Joseph, the Rangers. My one complaint is that Clare doesn't seem to have written any more of this series, and I'm needing more. Grrr.

In any case, I'm glad I took my fellow readers' advice and started reading Pamela Clare's excellent books. I'm going to keep going, and hoping for the next installment in the MacKinnon saga because there are several stories still to be told.

I definitely recommend Clare for people who want a refreshing historical with plenty of adventure and a bit of intrigue. I will read her contemporaries as well since they are also highly recommended by my fellow booklovers. I don't expect to be disappointed.
