Wow. Just . . . wow. I don't really care about the intellectual worth of this novel. I don't care that the simplistic prose is sometimes interrupted by an obscure word. This book is simply good, damn good.

I was luckily able to stay in the dark about this book and did not know the slightest thing about it. A friend simply told me it was great and that I would love it. He was right! I thank him for not even telling me the least bit about the premise. Once I was in I knew this was right up my alley.

It's bleak. It's dark. It's depressing. At times, it is grotesque. However, it is one of the most entertaining reads I've come across in quite awhile. The tale of a lazy husband, an ignored grandmother, a horny and ugly daughter, a clueless son, a "woman preacher" who sleeps around, and a mother along for the ride. Caldwell's Tobacco Road is quite the humorous glimpse at a Depression-era family of the South. They speak with the drawl, often repeating their statements within a matter of minutes. It's a highly satirized and exaggerated view of these people, but hey, it's worth quite a few laughs.
