In Moore's laugh out loud "gospel" we first meet the savior as he is observed with his baby brother. The brother is pounding a little lizard to death, Jesus takes the "unclean" little thing, puts it in his mouth where it is resurrected, he removes it wriggling with life and gives it back to the little brother, who repeats the process many times. Later, adolescent Jesus forgets to ask the Angel of the Lord whether it's okay for the son of God to have sex, and he doesn't want to make anyone upset, so he pays prostitutes to have sex with Biff and gets the full report, so he can better understand the fullness of human existence. They journey to the east and the savior gains wisdom from many uncanny and unexpected sources. The title of the book may seem to some sacrilegious, but this book is everything except sacrilegious. There is absolute reverence for that which is truly holy in life in the most irreverent and funny "gospel" one might read. I recommend this one to recovering Catholics and Baptists alike. A wonderful little book...renewed faith for the faithful and rekindled faith for the faithless. Full of reminders of how the truth of goodness hides under all manner of rocks.

This was the first of the Discworld books I read. What a marvelous instrument and set of tools must it take to write such books. Here is the genre of philosophical humor. With a philosophical foundation from which to read, you will be in stitches. With a healthy curiosity for metaphysics and the willingness to stop and look things up, you will still be in stitches. A wonderful broad stroke--an ingenious conception of the world. Serious imagination required.

I had the incredible fortune to see this play off Broadway in the mid-seventies. Recently, a friend sent me the "Someone Almost Walked Off Wid Alla My Stuff" excerpt and prompted me to read it again. This is a work "For Colored Girls" but I don't know a woman my age who doesn't feel almost every word.

The daughter of philosopher William Godwin, Shelley's short novel must be read by some as autobiographical. A magnificent piece -- haunting and lovely.
