Revolutionary Road is a piece of devastation that creeps up on you from behind with a very heavy leather. Where most suburban relationship drama seems to reach for platitudes, or cliché, or the breaks, Revolutionary Road keeps a steady clip aimed straight for the edge of the cliff.

Not only does it beautifully encapsulate a time and place, it dives head-first into the underbelly, which bears surprising resemblance (and relevance) to the present day. This was a fantastic read. I'd begun reading it a few years ago, and found it dull compared to The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, which I'd read just prior. It had none of the fanfare and mystery which TWUBC had. But reading it now, I was immediately sucked in. The story flows like a movie, as Murakami's work often does - it is seamless and smooth, like milk or brandy. His uncanny scenarios and coincidences rarely seem far-flung or hideously unbelievable, and his everyman character is somehow so easy to root for.
