<about>I've been a bookseller for, well, a very long time, so I'm very good at recommending books, even ones I haven't read. I know a little about a lot of things, but I forget some things, too, so I have to keep filling up that bucket...I read through phases. Past phases include American slavery, Richard Ford, cooking memoirs, China, knitting, Booker T. Washington, William Kotzwinkle. Currently I'm in a "tourist attraction as historical landmark" phase. </about>

It's calling my name, too. I haven't read Cocaine Nights, so I'll have to take a look. I think I see the comparison you make for Crash, but I think there's something so compelling about the soul-deadening mall of our generation that can make for interesting new literature, without the layers of drugs or sexual addictions that Crash relies on. Those layers aren't necessary to discovering why a mall, with its florescent lights and fake palms, is such an attraction, and at the same time, such a zombification of otherwise normal people. I work in one myself, so perhaps I have a biased view. But I know that guy in the electric wheelchair, coming in day after day for his Mozart on tape. That guy is real, and the mall made him.
