If you read the synopsis of this book you just might get the notion that it concentrates a little heavily on some Idol star shenanigans.
Fear not, that is the past and the story takes place after those events.
Our anti hero, Calvin, escapes to the small town of Harvey to lick his wounds and get his music career back on track.
But like most small towns, nothing is ever as quaint and harmless as it seems. There's something strange going on in them there woods and there's some pretty strange people hanging around in it too.
Calvin, it seems, is going to get less rest in Harvey than he did in the big city.
This story kind of captivates you right from the start with a pair of good old boy's night on that town that goes terribly wrong. And from there a crisp but surreal atmosphere takes root; and you know right away that Calvin picked the wrong town to escape to.
Rossi's narration is pitch perfect in nailing the mysterious menace creeping up on Harvey.

I loved the epic nature of this book and the novel fresh approach to what often can become a tired, familiar tale.
Simmon takes it all from a totally different perspective with vampires of a totally different nature.
They would be mind vampires..psychic vampires: not blood drinkers but mind thieves ....and all the more frightening they are..
A very clever epic and a cast of characters and a plotted path that is riveting.

Phil Rossi proves himself to be more than just a great story teller: but a genuine writer of stark and beautiful prose and imagery.
And his characters, for such a brief story form (novella) are sharply defined and his landscape, of "Eden", is vividly real.
I do think this is a well written crime thriller. Thumbs up. But the editing and the uneven narration did get in the way a bit for me.
This is a comfortable book to like; despite the premise of the super hero and comic book genre. It's really much more down to earth than that and reads more as a familiar parable that we all can relate to.
The angsty but very likable teenager in turmoil, feeling he is different as he moves on his own journey of self discovery.....all along with family secrets once hidden and endless obstacles to break through on that journey.
It finds a way to make the whole genre real and familiar for those of us that typically would give this sort of story a pass or find the whole premise silly.
You will like Nate and you will find yourself pulling for him.

I liked this book because it made me think.
It's not only the "secrets" between David and Nora that make this book intriguing but the way it shows that even the things we don't know can affect our lives and change our path.
An interesting slice of the tools we are all carved from.
I liked it because I started out dispising the character of David but found I was able to understand and even empathize with his character.
Sometimes we do what we think is for the best and the pebble continues to grow circles in the water..
I liked it because all the characters did change and did grow, even as they were unaware of all the forces outside of their control.
Simply put...I like a book that makes me think.
