This is the first book I read (listened to) by Nick Hornby. In a way, I am glad I read this first. So many reviews of this book claim that the novel is not as good as HF. I guess it's kind of hard to separate the author's works from each other.

Anyway. I thought the character's were constructed well. And the story lines were fun and complicated with real life. The multiple POV narratives helped to see the lives of the characters through many different lenses.

This was the first book in a while that captured my attention and forced me to finish it in two days. So for that, I give this a pretty high rating. Nice job, Nick.

I learned about the coal mines in PA and some interesting facts about global warming, and that walking the AP is not something I will be doing anytime soon. This was my first "travel memoir." I read it because it was assigned reading. Thankfully, it was assigned reading...because I probably would not have passed it in the book store.

The book is entertaining and educational. I wouldn't call the book a page turner...It is a trek. It moves slow and deliberate. Sometimes it is heavy with history and facts but Bryson uses comedy to keep the reader moving forward in the book.

But please, don't let my page turner comment throw you off, I think it's ok to read a book slow. It's ok to take the long journey twenty or thirty pages at a time.

I have spent most of the summer reading novels that explore small town / suburban cultures. The Bright Forever is one of my favorites. The author paints a great setting and by way of 4 narrative voices, he creates excellent tension. As well, each of the four main voices are clearly individual and unique. The reader feels loathing for the "bad guys" yet empathy for all. This is a great read.
I do like Bartleby...alot actually. I actually respect Moby Dick and Melville in general...just the story (I can't believe I am going to say this out loud) it bored me. It never grabbed my interest. I should probably give it another try, and most likely will when I get back to reading from my playlist....but for now, I must live in the minority opinion.

Speaking of Bartleby, I saw part of a movie version of it with Crispen Glover (i think that's his name...McFly?). This post reminded me that I need to netflix that movie. Thanks :)
