Wow. I can honestly say I am impressed by this book. I've seen it float through the library for a year or so, and never wanted to read it because it was about vampires--and I've never been into that sort of genre before.
But then I saw the movie trailer, and I knew I had to read it.
So, in all, the story is very well crafted. I was in love from page one. Bella and Edward are real characters: they have feelings, emotions, anger, fights, and faults. They make mistakes, they misjudge each other. And they have an uncontrollable attraction to one another.
What I love so much is that they battle with words. It's like psychological sparing. And it's so fun to read! The very thread that runs through the book revolves around two things: words and eyes. The color of eyes, staring, that way they look at each other--it's always changing and always enchanting.
In the day and a half that it took me to consume this book, I forgot everything and floated around in a fantasy world. If you need a story to take your mind off life--this is the one for you!
There seems to be some concern about the issue of girls being led to think that all guys are like Edward...or should be. But, let us be reminded--Edward is not perfect. He is inherently dangerous, and could kill Bella in an instant. Should we be concerned about teaching our girls that if they're in love with someone they should abandon all and stay attached...well, that's just part of the story. And, it is just a story. If I had read this book in early high school, I don't know what kind of influence it might have had over me...now that I'm in college, I simply enjoy it for the literature quality that it is. ...less
