This isn't a book for high school students. Jean Rhys was relatively famous as an author in the nineteen-twenties. She wrote a series of seriously depressing books that were caught up in her abusive relationship with her violent, wild husband and her own alcoholism. She stopped writing in the thirties, sunk off to Cornwall, and didn't publish anything for thirty years. Then she writes The Wide Sargasso Sea. It's an incredible exploration of how your life, your relationships, and your mind can twist into something unrecognizable over time. It looks at how you can deteriorate into madness without realizing it. Where else have you read about this level of despair. And the best part of it, she did it all in the context of Jane Eyre. She took one of the best loved romantic heros of all time and showed us the dark side of him (much like her personal knowledge of her husband versus what everyone else saw).
