Jack McEvoy is a newspaper reporter for the Rocky Mountain News. He writes about murders. The first lines of the book are- “Death is my beat. I make my living from it. I forge my professional reputation on it.”
Then his brother, Sean, a cop dies, and it’s ruled suicide. Jack can’t accept it; he tries, but can’t. He starts his own investigation, and comes up with new evidence to convince the police that Sean didn’t commit suicide but was murdered. Not only that, but Jack couldn’t figure out Sean’s note which read-
“Out of space. Out of time.”
Then he figures that out too- it’s a line from an Edgar Allen Poe poem.
As he investigates, he finds a link among his brother’s murder and several other cops’ murders- all with last notes quoting Poe.
Wonderful mystery, powerful writing, complex characters.

I finally finished Rex Stout's Some Buried Caesar. It was the book Bouchercon chose this year for the One Conference, One Book title. It was my first Rex Stout title. I can't say I'm eager to run out and read another. On the other hand, I also finished Michael Connelly's The Poet, and loved it! ]]>
Kate Atkinson has a wonderful series featuring the character Jackson Brodie. These are a bit hard-edged, but she's gotten lots of attention in the last few years. Also, what about Ruth Rendell? I don't know if she was mentioned, but she has written over 50 novels, which are psychological crime thrillers and a series featuring Chief Inspector Wexford, which are police procedurals. She also writes under the name of Barbara Vine. Great British writer. ]]>
