The main character is a graduate student who loves ...more I'm only a few chapters in so far, but the opening makes this seem like it might be a postmodern mystery/thriller or perhaps that should be a mystery/thriller with a postmodern context or something. The main character is a graduate student who loves postmodern theory, etc. She stumbles on a book that is supposed to not exist (except possibly in a vault in Germany). Her grad school professor has disappeared (though no one in the department seems to take much notice). The book might be cursed as rumor has it that anyone who reads it dies. And there's a page missing from it. The opening few chapters are pretty addictive, though things seem to have bogged down a bit now. Time will tell.

Update:
I finally finished and overall I'd give it a thumbs up. it's an unconventional book, driven by philosophical ideas and at the same time something of a thriller (sort of). The prose does lag at times, but then along will come some interesting ideas that make up for the pacing. It's built on the question: What is real? And it includes questions about the relationship between matter, energy, and thought. For example, here's a quote, "We're now living with the uncertainty principle and the incompleteness theorem and philosophers who say that the world has become a simulacrum--a copy without an original. We live in a world where nothing may be real, a world of infinite closed systems, and particles that could be doing anything you like (but probably aren't" (p.34). It does address the possible existence of life beyond the physical and even possibilities and limits of religion. Oh, and Apollo Smintheus, the mouse god, is a cool character.

And given this site, I can't resist passing along this book-related quote: "Real life is regularly running out of money, and then food. Real life is having no proper heating. Real life is physical. Give me books instead: Give me the invisibility of the contents of books, the thoughts, the ideas, the images. Let me become part of a book; I'd give anything for that" (p. 117).(less) "
