Dick maintained that all his fiction was realistic. Sometimes this amounts to an omnipotent, childish motive in which one's inner thought directly changes the reality of others. But in this book, somehow this idea works.
Two aspects that impressed me in this book: how the author imagined the inner subjective worlds of his characters under a different political and social order--and expresses it in the very language these characters think through--especially the mental makeup of those colonized (in this case, Americans by the Jepanese). Secondly, the fine ironies of inventing an alternative world in order to reflect on contemporary reality--for example, what social uses and meanings are possible in modern technologies such as television. Or reflecting on the cold war through the formulation of an alternate cold war between Japan and Germany, between America and Great Britain. Despite its flaws (sometimes the characters are merely excuses to make an argument. The end is a failure, a typical one for Dick), I find this one the most captivating of Dick's books--extremely melancholic, a working out of the great theme of the '60s--the free space left to individual thought and feelings in an impersonal world of systems and institutions that instrumentalize humans for aims that appear ever more insane. ...less
