Where do I begin? So many coincidences and tie-ins that I couldn't help but be drawn in. My great grandfather and his father were (Pennsylvania) coal miners. My granduncle married a woman from the same county that the author grew up in, which is the setting for this story (McDowell County, West Virginia). My dad's nickname is Sonny (named for the aforementioned great grandfather and granduncle, so had to have a distinctive nickname). I was a science/math geek who had a dream (never realized) of working at NASA. This book reminded me of those penned by Laura Ingalls Wilder who wrote another quintessential American story about her childhood. The author weaves together the story of his life, somewhat fictionalizes it, and it makes a wonderful tale of growing up in the 1950s. It gave me a better feel for what it was like to grow up in a coal mining town, like my grandmother's family did. The movie (October Sky), based on this book, was also excellent.
