Reading a boring economics book about The White Man's Burden for book club, I felt the need to buy a book I actually was excited to read. So far, much more entertaining, and I'm only 3 pages in. ]]>
You'd be surprised how entertaining simply reading a list of names could be. Think Akeldama, the "Field of Blood" where Judas Iscariot fell headlong and "burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out" would be a badass name for your Black Metal band?

I'd call it 3.5. Though maybe I liked it more because I simply didn't find it as underwhelming as some of the other McSweeney's stuff I bought on sale. I'm sure plenty would find it too "clever" or smug with itself or whatever the standard McSweeney's complaint is, and if you're inclined to those sorts of judgments it'd be an easy judgment to make. I really enjoyed figuring out the puzzle of it all, a puzzle that seemed an attempt to be more Nabakovian than an attempt to be a standard mystery, which it wraps itself in the tropes of as well. Whether its an empty or meaningless puzzle would probably be where opinions divide. ]]>

Not bad, but it didn't really blow me away either. The midpoint of enjoyment from all the McSweeney's books I recently bought on sale. ]]>
