I read Shadows of the Empire, which was entertaining, but something about it didn't feel natural, like some details were skimped on. With this novel, however, Timothy Zahn really brought the Star Wars universe back to life, with the characters truly feeling like the characters we knew and loved with the movies and introducing new, deep and interesting characters. The writing here is very good, and I definitely am looking forward to reading the second novel in the Thrawn Trilogy....less

The last book in Varley's most recent trilogy -- much like Red Thunder had a different feel from the first book, this one, too, reads differently from the first two books. I wouldn't recommend reading this book without reading the first two, as you might be a bit lost, but that's just a better reason to read the whole trilogy!
To me, Varley sort of has two different writing styles... his "old" style and his "new", as I call them. The old style includes many of his Eight Worlds stories like Steel Beach and Golden Globe and his Gaian Trilogy... the new style has the first two books in this trilogy and Mammoth. The new style is still very good and very enjoyable, more accessible than the old style, but just different. This book, however, felt like a good balance between his old style and new style, and the end result, while still accessible like his more recent novels, really had an old school Varley feel to it. And that is not a bad thing... not in the least....less

It was a little tough getting back into the Weather Warden series after not reading any of them for a while... well, no, that's not entirely true. It was tough picking up the book to read, but once I did, it got me hooked again. Great book, though it seemed a little on the short side for some reason. Not sure why, it doesn't feel like quite as much happened, or like some of the regular characters got enough "screen time". Because of [spoiler, which you know if you finished the last book], the book almost felt like a brief summary of the previous books and reexamination of characters, though the storyline involved wasn't bad by any means. It did tie up a few loose ends for a couple side stories and open some new doors for future books.
And of course, Caine does what she loves so much to do, and that is end the book with a HUGE setup for the next one in the series, just like she did last time and she's done in the past in this series and others she writes. Not bad, mind you, but it seemed to come a little soon -- considering there is a bonus chapter, and my judging from the thickness of the remaining pages I thought there was a decent amount of story remaining of THIS book, which turned out to be incorrect. So that caught me a bit off-guard.
Kind of like the last one, it felt a bit like a connector more than a standalone novel. But a very enjoyable book nonetheless....less
