A story of such gloom so how is it that it can be so uplifting? Such is our lives...a Light shines in the darkness. Some quotes:
If Infinity had no Self, then self would not be.
The spirits of the righteous asleep commune with a mysterious heaven.
God moves the soul as He moves the oceans.
God is behind all things, but all things conceal God. Objects are black and human creatures are opaque. To love a person is to render them transparent.
There are moments when, whatever the posture of the body, the soul is on its knees.
The infinite calls for the inexhaustible.
He had not yet lived long enough to have discovered that nothing is more close at hand than the impossible.
Whence should the cry of love proceed, if not from the sacrificial altar?
The pupil dilates in darkness and in the end finds light, just as the soul dilates in misfortune and in the end finds God.
To die is nothing, but it is terrible not to live....less

1. There is value in disillusionment with fellow Christians so to avoid seeing fellowship as an "extraordinary social experience."
2. "God has willed that we should seek and find His living Word in the witness of a brother, in the mouth of a man."
3. "The Psalter is the vicarious prayer of Christ for His church...the new Humanity of Christ, the Body continues to pray His prayer...that is why the prayer of the Psalms belongs...to the fellowship."

I liked how the book started out. Simplicity. The Gospel is simple and profound. Making disciples is simple and profound. Successful churches have simplified their efforts and left the hard work to the Holy Spirit. As the book moved toward the statistical analysis, I put it down. I gained what I needed and didn't want to start viewing church as a business where the product is human hearts growing in faith. It seemed too cold and something that can't REALLY be measured...by us anyway. Man only looks at appearances. I was ready to move on to something that exalted God's perception of hearts....less
