          <body><![CDATA[I had read The Cure and River Rising by Athol Dickson—and loved them, so I was looking forward to Lost Mission. Once again the writing was superb, the characters fascinating, and the storyline engaging with one exception. Spanish history and Mexican culture have never appealed to me, so the histor...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/I%20had%20read%20The%20Cure%20and%20River%20Rising%20by%20Athol%20Dickson%E2%80%94and%20loved%20them,%20so%20I%20was%20looking%20forward%20to%20Lost%20Mission.%20Once%20again%20the%20writing%20was%20superb,%20the%20characters%20fascinating,%20and%20the%20storyline%20engaging%20with%20one%20exception.%20Spanish%20history%20and%20Mexican%20culture%20have%20never%20appealed%20to%20me,%20so%20the%20historical%20storyline%20was%20a%20bit%20challenging%20to%20get%20through,%20though%20Dickson%20deserves%20special%20notice%20for%20how%20deftly%20he%20wove%20in%20a%20past%20storyline%20involving%20Catholic%20monks%20establishing%20a%20mission%20in%20old-time%20California.%20I%20must%20admit%20that%20I%20sometimes%20found%20myself%20wanting%20to%20skip%20these%20parts%20and%20just%20get%20back%20to%20the%20modern%20storyline.%20It%20just%20wasn't%20an%20interesting%20storyline%20for%20me.%20Mexican%20culture%20is%20also%20pretty%20foreign,%20so%20I%20couldn't%20really%20appreciate%20much%20of%20the%20local%20color.%20%20%0A%0AThis%20well-written%20and%20often%20poetic%20novel%20raises%20complex%20ethical%20and%20spiritual%20issues%20that%20make%20readers%20think%20He%20tackles%20illegal%20immigration%20and%20appears%20to%20be%20sympathetic%20toward%20it%20by%20the%20fact%20that%20Lupe,%20the%20main%20character,%20is%20an%20illegal%20immigrant%20from%20Mexico.%20Tucker,%20who%20is%20running%20his%20own%20mission,%20takes%20water%20to%20the%20desert%20to%20help%20illegals%20who%20may%20be%20crossing%20the%20desert%20to%20California.%20Another%20theme%20has%20to%20do%20with%20mega%20churches%20who%20seek%20to%20separate%20themselves%20from%20the%20world,%20especially%20from%20illegal%20immigrants,%20and%20live%20in%20their%20own%20utopia.%20It's%20clear%20that%20these%20churches,%20overflowing%20with%20wealth,%20aren't%20doing%20enough%20to%20reach%20out%20to%20those%20who%20truly%20need%20help,%20even%20the%20basics%20like%20food%20and%20clothing.%20The%20complex%20issues%20are%20thought%20provoking%20and%20make%20the%20reader%20grapple%20with%20the%20moral%20dilemma%20of%20reaching%20out%20to%20people%20who%20according%20to%20our%20laws%20shouldn't%20even%20be%20in%20our%20country.%20%0A%0AOne%20aspect%20of%20the%20novel%20that%20disappointed%20me%20was%20Dickson's%20sympathetic%20treatment%20of%20Catholics.%20Catholic%20doctrine%20does%20not%20embrace%20the%20true%20gospel%20due%20to%20its%20works-based%20salvation.%20Yet%20the%20novel's%20main%20character%20is%20Catholic%20at%20the%20beginning%20and%20Catholic%20at%20the%20end;%20she%20even%20%22preaches%22%20to%20those%20who%20need%20to%20hear%20the%20truth,%20yet%20I'm%20baffled%20as%20to%20what%20that%20truth%20could%20be.%20If%20she's%20a%20devout%20Catholic,%20she%20doesn't%20personally%20possess%20the%20truth%20of%20grace%20alone%20by%20faith%20alone.%20If%20I%20personally%20met%20a%20Lupe%20who%20loved%20God%20and%20wanted%20to%20serve%20Him,%20I%20would%20first%20challenge%20her%20faith%20to%20be%20sure%20she%20wasn't%20depending%20on%20works%20for%20salvation.%20If%20she%20did%20depend%20on%20grace%20alone,%20then%20I%20would%20have%20strongly%20encouraged%20her%20to%20leave%20the%20Catholic%20Church.%20The%20novel%20is%20highly%20sympathetic%20toward%20Catholics,%20a%20disappointment%20for%20me.%20I%20kept%20hoping%20that%20Tucker%20or%20someone%20would%20probe%20Lupe's%20faith%20and%20tell%20her%20the%20truth%20about%20Catholic%20false%20teachings,%20but%20no%20one%20does.%20%0A%0AIn%20the%20end,%20the%20novel%20is%20superbly%20written%20and%20often%20poetic,%20and%20the%20complex%20modern%20storyline%20kept%20me%20reading.%20But%20due%20to%20complex%20and%20controversial%20issues%20that%20deserved%20a%20clear%20biblical%20answer,%20I%20felt%20divided%20over%20the%20novel's%20final%20message.%20Athol's%20message%20is%20clear%20that%20mega%20churches%20that%20seek%20to%20separate%20from%20the%20world%20and%20ignore%20those%20who%20need%20help%20are%20bad%20and%20that%20Christians%20who%20run%20a%20small%20mission%20and%20help%20illegal%20aliens%20are%20good.%20In%20the%20end,%20neither%20those%20who%20run%20the%20mega%20church%20are%20completely%20wrong,%20and%20neither%20are%20those%20who%20help%20illegal%20aliens%20completely%20right.%20Still,%20Lost%20Mission%20was%20a%20fascinating,%20if%20not%20tragic,%20read.%20Athol%20presents%20some%20of%20the%20best%20writing%20I've%20ever%20seen%20in%20Christian%20fiction,%20and%20I'll%20certainly%20read%20him%20again.%20">more...</a>]]></body>
