Three stars, with the caveat that like most Sanderson books, I couldn't put it down. I felt myself getting a little tired of Wax and Wayne. Wax was just angry and kind of dumb throughout this book. I suppose that fit with the storyline, but it was fr ...more

Jingo by Terry Pratchett
"When I need something comfortable on a Sunday afternoon, I generally pick up a Terry Pratchett novel. I'm not sure why I opted for this one over all the others, since it's not one of my favorites--or maybe that's why; it came across as fresher tha..." Read more of this review »

This audiobook kept me sane while commuting. Nothing to help you calm down and take life less seriously like a good Discworld book. This is a City Watch book, so it features Sam Vimes, Captain Carrot, Angua, Nobby Nobbs and Fred Colon prominently. Li ...more

Fun read but felt a little ho-hum by Brandon Sanderson standards (which is still really good)...until the last chapter or so. Then it quickly raised to normal Sanderson mind-blowingness. Fun read.

I go this through book bub. It's a military genre (written by a military guy, about people living and fighting in the military) book set in the future. Lots of action with fun sci-fi technology. Not much more too it. It was a fun action packed read. ...more

"1 1/2

I had avoided this book for awhile, despite all the good things I'd heard about it, primarily because I was afraid that the "gritty realism" proclaimed about in the book amounted to "bleak and disheartening". I read for entertainment, and I d..." Read more of this review »

Confession: I only made it half way through. The writing was a little odd in places, but really good in others. The best writing was where the crippled guy had to walk down stairs. It was a great mix of his cynical humor that keeps him going and his ...more

I read this around 20 years ago when I was in high school and I thought it was really cool at the time. I got the kindle version for a few bucks recently and just got around to reading it. It holds up. That's an understatement.

I hate to say it, but this was a little disappointing. The action was great and boy, was there a lot of it, but I would have liked a little time to breath and absorb the plot line that were being wrapped up. Come to think of it, a lot of new plot lin ...more

Herman Melville
“It does seem to me, that herein we see the rare virtue of a strong individual vitality, and the rare virtue of thick walls, and the rare virtue of interior spaciousness. Oh, man! admire and model thyself after the whale! Do thou, too, remain warm among ice. Do thou, too, live in this world without being of it. Be cool at the equator; keep thy blood fluid at the Pole. Like the great dome of St. Peter's, and like the great whale, retain, O man! in all seasons a temperature of thine own.”
