I avoided this for a long time, because if there's one thing I kind of dislike in YA literature, it's the whole grow-up-and-sacrifice-imagination theme. Which this is full of. It's not a bad book; I think if I was fifteen, I would have gotten more out of it. The writing is, of course, lovely.

Le Guin is really kind of consumed with the issue of gendered violence in anything she writes that takes place in our culture, which can be jarring when you're used to books that don't blame the patriarchy quite so much. Her points are valid; however, it can make some of her writing rather sobering.

A really wonderful book about history and memory and saving people. I liked this book a great deal and wish to reread it soon.

I do like Susan, and the central myth and metaphor here is interesting and not overly preachy. I really like the metaphysics of Discworld a lot.

Another somewhat-sketchy-character-just-bucks-up-and-does-amazing-things book. I love these. I especially love that the Unseen University makes almost no appearance.

See, this. This is one of the Pratchett books where I really adore his overblown metaphors and also his somewhat feckless characters. I really wonder if there's something super-british about his belief that everyday people can just buck up and get their kind of insipid selves together and do extraordinary things. I don't know why. It just seems British.

This was one of those books where I felt like Pratchett was having a lot of fun but I was starting to wonder if I had anything else I could be doing while he carried on. I find the Unseen University crew less sympathetic then pretty much all of his other characters - they're buffoonish and kind of slow, and they annoy me.

I guess I didn't like this book.
