When you trim down three novels and turn it into one, you end up with an incredibly long book that would probably be better read as three novels. But this gripe aside, this is the kind of writing that you only see in books by Cormac McCarthy, or maybe even William Faulkner. The three parts of this book deal with the lynching of one E. J. The novels that win the National Book Award usually go on to become massive best sellers, while those that merely get nominated usually go away. 2006 was finally Richard Powers' time to win, and unfortunately for Jess Walters it means this novel is now #532,325 on Amazon.com. In a just universe this would be one of the definitive 9/11 novels.
