If you make a trip to England, pick up this book to read after you've been there for a few days first. You'll find it immensely funnier.
The first chapter of this book = perfection. The Wales chapters of this book = tedium. To say his writing is wildly inconsistent is an understatement. He's only happy when the sun is shining, which (as I can attest from a recent trip upon which I started reading this book) is very rare in Great Britain. When he's grumpy in a location, you are grumpy reading about it. And when he's mean to people, he's really truly mean and it's not funny, as he obviously intends.
Bill Bryson's books are interesting and informative, but a bit dull when he reverts into essay form. They truly snap to life when he falls into memoir/anecdotal form, which is why I keep coming back to him as a writer. Every time I read a Bryson book, I feel very anxious to be done with it. And yet, at the same time, there are about 4 others of his books that I want to read still. Glutton for punishment? Perhaps he's another "in between" writer for me - someone I can fall back on, like David Sedaris or Augusten Burroughs.
This is the last book that I finished in my 20s. ]]>
