I gave it an extra star for being the basis of a superb movie. This is the sole exception to "the book is always better than the movie." Sparks wrote this book at a 4th grade reading level. It was torture to get through. It was cheesy and awkward and everything the movie managed NOT to be. Props to whoever converted it to a screenplay- they saved the story and made it what it needed to be. And props to whoever was able to recognize that there was a decent story hidden within the rubbish that is this book. ]]>

I don't know about always. I know that in Leonardo the Terrible Monster the pigeon is tucked inside the hat of the one that is "just plain weird." And in Knuffle Bunny the pigeon is in a drawing on the wall of the girl's bedroom AND Leonardo is in her room.
We haven't made it to chapter books yet. I've started transitioning the 6-year-old to picture books that have a lot of text on a page. But thanks for the tip :) ]]>
