A great guide to finding humour at work, even if it's not the sort of thing you're actually going to try yourself. Peppered with appropriate Dilbert strips and with a sprinkling of real-life anecdotes, Adams provides a wondersouly amusing look at office life that can't help but make any white-collar worker smile throughout.

A wonderfully original concept, backed up by great characterisation and fantastic writing. Ennis is a fist-class wordsmith and Dillon's art is as wild and wonderful as the script. Together they've conjoured up something with true american grit and style, from the pens and pencils of a pair of brits, using english artisty and irish wit.

Definately a series I'll be following, now I've finally caught with it (a decade late).

A very unique way to write a story, Crichton uses a mix of actual historical documentation and personalised fiction to blend two classic stories together into his own work of hitorical fantasy.

This book overlaps the stories of Beowulf and the documented adventures of historical writer Ahmed ibn Fadlan and merges them into an original story written in the style of Ibn Fadlan's travelogue.

The first three chapters are a slow start, taking directly from translations of the original manuscripts, setting the scene for us, not only of Ibn Fadlan's adventures, but the man and his writing style. Throughout the book Crichton punctuates the story with his own notes of either linguistic, historical or cultural interest, upholding the pretense that he is not the author, but rather simply the translator or a historian.

The unique writing style of Ibn Fadlan makes this an interesting read in itself, not flowing exactly like any other modern author usually would, taking a first-hand and rather biast look at Norse life through the eyes of a 10th century Arab. Overall, the insight into both cultures is rich and the comparisson and sometimes similarity of the two I found particually interesting.

After reading this book, certain parts of the film based on it (The 13th Warrior) become a little clearer, and I can appreciate the film a little more for it, and likewise, the book a little more for seeing the film. Not great works of literature or cinema, perhaps, but classics in their own rite.

Well, it was a very good film. Would be nice to read the book after I've seen it again maybe, seeing as we have a nice paperback copy of it now.
