I, Claudius by Robert Graves
" The passage in which Augustus asks the nobility if they think they're Vestal Virgins is my absolute favorite - it is so easy to picture! "
Renata is on page 159 of 468 of I, Claudius: I'm loving the book. I'm also surprised at how frequently passages make me stop and reflect on their relevance to more modern times, eg 159 when Germanicus asks Claudius to research information on the Balkan tribes so that he can better prepare his senior officers and their strategies, or earlier when Augustus chastises the younger nobility on marriage and bearing children to continue their line.

Yes, we are all mad, we Emperors. We begin sanely, like Augustus and Tiberius and even Caligula (though he was an evil character, he was sane at first), and monarchy turns our wits.

This book is much more tragic than the last. Claudius becomes the d

“Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.”
Winston S. Churchill

P.G. Wodehouse
“What ho!" I said.
"What ho!" said Motty.
"What ho! What ho!"
"What ho! What ho! What ho!"
After that it seemed rather difficult to go on with the conversation.”
P.G. Wodehouse, My Man Jeeves

Joan Didion
“...I think we are well-advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering on the mind's door at 4 a.m. of a bad night and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends. We forget all too soon the things we thought we could never forget. We forget the loves and the betrayals alike, forget what we whispered and what we screamed, forget who we were.”
Joan Didion, Slouching Towards Bethlehem

J.R.R. Tolkien
“Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate
And though I oft have passed them by
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun.”
J.R.R. Tolkien

Martha Graham
“It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable it is, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.”
Martha Graham
