I remember when I first realized that I love to read. I was probably about eleven, and I found the book Anne of Green Gables. I devoured it and experienced my first ever book "magic." I devoured it, reading and reading all through the afternoon and night. At the last page, I cried because I couldn't bear to say goodbye. When I realized there was a sequel I begged my mom to take me to get it. She didn't. She was busy. She forgot. She didn't think it was important. Well, it was important to me! It wasn't until several years later that I was able to get Anne of Avonlea at the school library. Again, I devoured the book, reacquainting myself with the characters I'd come to love. Montgomery made the names leap to life in my heart and soul. Anne and Diana and Gilbert were like friends. I wanted to live in their small village. I wanted to go to school with them everyday. I couldn't get enough of their every day antics! Several years later when PBS created the mini-series I watched with glee as the characters that I'd come to love as a child took shape on the screen. Of course, the movie wasn't as good as the thrill of the book (it never is) but I felt like I'd reconnected with, as Anne would say, my "bossom buddies." I thank L.M. Montogomery for introducing me to book "magic." Because of my "magic" experience with Anne of Green Gables I became a reader. I'm not even picky. If it's got words that create vivid characters and a decent plot that doesn't take too long to suck me in--I'll read it!
