I didn’t except to like Nancy Horan’s Loving Frank. The premise is kinda wonky- forbidden love between architectural genius Frank Lloyd Wright and his Oak Park client, Mamah Borthwick Cheney. Beyond the fact that I couldn’t pronounce “Mamah” consistently throughout the book (in my head of course, I wasn’t reading aloud on the Metro) I found myself instantaneously hooked after the first few pages, and pleasantly surprised after the last. Without giving too much of it away, the book is a fictionalized account of the very real relationship between the two. The novel portrays the affair in gritty detail, its impact on families, husbands, and wives. Horan does not shrink from exposing the disproportionate social impact the affair has on Mamah. A woman’s responsibility to her family places undue pressure on her, while Frank escapes relatively unscathed.
