Stephanie Plum has just lost her job as a lingerie buyer for a second-rate department store, and she really needs some money. She convinces her cousin Vinny to let her try her hand at FTA apprehension, aka being a bounty hunter. Her first case is to find and bring in Joe Morelli, a guy Stephanie hooked up with in high school and once tried to run over with a car, who is now wanted for murder. Bounty hunting ends up being pretty dangerous (shocker) and Stephanie is not quite prepared. Equal parts hilarity and light danger ensue.
I found this entertaining, there were certainly some funny parts, but I found Stephenie's naivete and bad choices kind of annoying sometimes. I would probably keep reading the series though.
Good book for the car, good reader, enough mix of humor/action to keep you listening....less

Marilyn Grimes is just trying to get through life. She has a husband in the midst of a mid-life crisis, a crazy sister, and dreams of a career pushed aside for her family. A lot of what Marilyn is going through seems very much age-based (menopause, a long marriage with the romance dwindling) but I still had no problem relating to her. Even though she deals with some serious issues, this book is also really, really funny. ...less

Margaret has been commissioned to write a biography of Vida Winter, an incredibly popular and prolific writer. Ms. Winter is notorious for making up stories about her life, and Margaret is not interested in being the medium for publishing another one of Vida Winters' stories. Ms. Winters assures Margaret that this time she wants to tell the truth, and so the amazing story unfolds.
This book is a little bit mystery, a little bit Jane Austen-y, a little bit chick lit. I started out listening to it on audio book but just couldn't get through it; once I switched to the hard copy, however, I couldn't put it down. I don't know if that is a reflection so much of the narrator (maybe she was too good, her voice made me want to take a nap) or the fact that I gave up on it right before it started getting good. This is a smart novel; unlike some mysteries, when you see the twists coming a mile before the characters do, Margaret is smart enough to keep up with us. I did not see what was coming. It was close to a 5-star but I think the beginning was a little tedious. ...less

Alice McKinley is sure she is the most embarrassing person on earth. She is also sure it's because she doesn't have a mother to show her what to do. Alice thinks if she can only get the beautiful Miss Cole as her teacher this year, she can adopt Miss Cole as her surrogate mother and get back on the right track. Alas, she is Mrs. Plotkin's room, and Alice is mortified. Everything bad always happens to her! Will Alice ever grow up? Or will she keep growing backwards?
I thought Alice was so spot-on as an adolescent girl. EVERY girl her age is convinced she is a mess. Her inability to control her frustration and her perception that she is always getting the short end of the stick so reminds me of me at that age. Naylor mixes plenty of funny situations too so the reader is not constantly feeling sorry for the trials and tribulations of Alice. I look forward to reading more of this series. ...less

The premise of this story is that the fairy tale land from where all our favorite stories and characters have originated has been taken over by a mysterious Adversary. They have long since moved to our world to escape the Adversary while they plot how to regain control of their land. Snow White has been sent as an emissary to another magical land resembling the middle east to try to gain an ally in the fight. She is imprisoned there and set to be sacrificed by the sultan, but she persuades him to keep her alive by entertaining him with stories. We get to hear, for example, how the old woman in the gingerbread house from "Hansel and Gretel" got so powerful and evil, and how Snow White came to avenge her own ill treatment on behalf of the seven dwarfs.
This novel is evidently based on a regularly-run comic of the fables that are promo'd in the introduction for those who enjoy this graphic novel.
I really liked the concept but I was disappointed in the final product. I just didn't find the stories all that compelling. I suppose the point is to tease you enough to make you want to read the comic, but I didn't get enough of any one story or character to really care that much....less

Steve is an intelligent high school senior, recently moved from Texas to California, in danger of not graduating. His high school counselor proposes he write a 100-page paper on how and why he came to California in lieu of the English credit Steve is missing on his transcript. As Steve writes, he flashes back between the past and the present and the reader also comes to learn how Steve went from promising high school writer to a pot-smoking flunkie.
I didn't love the ending of this book, it felt like the author ran out of steam at the end. Still, it's entertaining enough that I didn't regret my decision to read it. I did get a little confused by the flashbacks at first though, since they involve him moving between his parents' houses (they are divorced). ...less

Billy Bloom is a flamboyantly gay high school boy who has just moved to a very conservative high school in Florida. Rather than try to hide who he is, he celebrates his difference by coming to school dressed in full-out drag as a Swamp Bride. He further infuriates his classmates by deciding to run for homecoming queen. Also complicating Billy's life is the crush he has developed on the star quarterback.
This is definitely very humorous, even the parts that are horrifying (like when he gets beaten up and almost raped). The characters aren't very well-developed though, so it's hard to get to invested in them. ...less
