I remember being compelled to read Faulkner's work in high school, and having such a difficult time appreciating the themes in this work. Now I know why I had difficulty with the psychological themes and the character development when I first read. I've re-read, and now with better education and loads of life experience, I have to say this is one of the most engaging, moving works that has impacted my literary interests and life perspective in some respects. I highly encourage!

I thought it would be another "how to" book about sprucing up your messed up, awfully sad relationship woes....but no! This is a very interesting, unique book (nothing like what I've read before about relationships). It's basically an assessment and reflection workbook that helps you and your lover explore whether you are in a screwed up relationship. It explores the most important things for healthy relationships according to the author: passion, intimacy, communication, trust, commitment, etc..with thought and emotion-provoking statements that you rate. But when you rate them, the author really makes you think and feel...get insight from the entire process.

Honestly, when I think about messed up relationships, the thoughts I conjure up are pretty simplistic women's Cosmo type magazine ideas about dysfunction. This book goes to the supermax and makes you think and identify issues that are easily suppressed, denied or just invisible to us; stuff that is really happening to people daily, and the sad fact is too often we tolerate it.

I highly recommend this book. It is not only appropriate for those in current relationships, also a super resource for those planning to love!! I think it can prepare and cue you in to stuff before you get tangled up in a nasty "dysfunctional" relationship. It really awakened me to all the potential craziness that is out there!

I also enjoyed the author's recommendations for coping with these relationships. Very helpful, clear, and paradoxically...disturbing.

Girls....before you commit yourself to someone, this is a good tool to have in your purse!

(less)

This is a solid book emphasizing the importance of awareness, problem engagement and resolution. Giannet takes the most vital key areas of healthy relationships and identifies 240 themes ranging from sexuality to communication.... that are critically important to relationships.... and gives the reader the opportunity to rank where she or he is on each area. It provides a candid portrayal of relationships (if the reader is willing to really invest the time and emotional energy to think and reflect on their interpersonal experiences).

I also liked his reflection questions, where the reader is asked to contemplate on various themes ranging from goals to social support to attempted strategies to improve the relationship. His recommendations for change are very insightful and definately work, again, if one is truly invested in healthy change.

We have all asked what the ingredients of a bad relationship are...I think this manual provides a truly exhaustive answer, and it also identifies even unspoken areas that we often overlook consciously or unconscioulsy.

If I were in psychotherapy today, knowing what I know, I would be extremely grateful if my therapist offered this power-packed book as a gift for my current relationship and, if applicable, my future ones.

This book provides an incredible narrative about the power of the mind in influencing disease and health. Medical treatments are indeed influenced by our emotional coping, our stories, our relationships. The presence or absence of love is so critical in healing, and Siegel's account is filled with depth and beauty. It gives much hope to anyone with chronic illnesses.
