Yes indeed, I lovelovelove all of Pat Conroy's books and zipped right through South of Broad. This is not his best but it is still very good. Prince of Tides along with My Losing Season and the Great Santini are my favorites... but don't get the wrong idea here, every one of his books are worth reading. Do yourself a favor and read ALL his books-if for some strange reason you do not like the story, at the very least you will take pleasure from how he writes. He has a wonderful way with words- all his books are mostly about dysfunctional families. Some people have commented that they do not find some of his characters believable- these people are obviously "not" from the South. This book is one of those books that will appeal to almost anyone. It certainly charmed me...it also moved me to actually look up the Guernsey Island and learn more of its history. The entire book is comprised of letters, and is a wonderful surprise to those of us who usually steer clear of this kind of composition. It takes place in 1946 and starts when author Juliet Ashton receives a letter from a man who lives on the island of Guernsey. He has read a secondhand book and sees it was once owned by her. The book is by Charles Lamb and he is so taken with Lamb he writes Juliet asking how he can get hold of other books by this author. The telling is mostly through letters between Juliet Ashton, the members of the literary society in the Guernsey Islands, her agent, her best friend, and her boyfriend. The letters/story flows with suspense, romance and intrigue. I haven't enjoyed a story like this since Charring Cross Road. Don't be like me and leave it lying around because you 'think' it will be slow and a mind numbing read. Buy, borrow or get from the library today. You will not be sorry. Trust me.
