I thought it would be another "how to" book about sprucing up your messed up, awfully sad relationship woes....but no! This is a very interesting, unique book (nothing like what I've read before about relationships). It's basically an assessment and reflection workbook that helps you and your lover explore whether you are in a screwed up relationship. It explores the most important things for healthy relationships according to the author: passion, intimacy, communication, trust, commitment, etc..with thought and emotion-provoking statements that you rate. But when you rate them, the author really makes you think and feel...get insight from the entire process.
Honestly, when I think about messed up relationships, the thoughts I conjure up are pretty simplistic women's Cosmo type magazine ideas about dysfunction. This book goes to the supermax and makes you think and identify issues that are easily suppressed, denied or just invisible to us; stuff that is really happening to people daily, and the sad fact is too often we tolerate it.
I highly recommend this book. It is not only appropriate for those in current relationships, also a super resource for those planning to love!! I think it can prepare and cue you in to stuff before you get tangled up in a nasty "dysfunctional" relationship. It really awakened me to all the potential craziness that is out there!
I also enjoyed the author's recommendations for coping with these relationships. Very helpful, clear, and paradoxically...disturbing.
Girls....before you commit yourself to someone, this is a good tool to have in your purse!

This was an interesting rehashing of uncle Siggie Freud's theories. I read it for a book review project I did in my social work course. My prudish professeur suggested that I had problems with my superego.

What a wild ride reading this one!
I could not get into the torched porn star, macho super cliche, and his relationship with the psychologically disturbed chic was wonderful fantasy.
I think what made this book four star for me was the stories that the author peppered throughout the relationship. The stories about her various love experiences and the overwhelmingly bizarre but thouching themes of loss.
My favourite was the one about the lady who lost her husband to the storm and spent her living eternity looking for him....until she...
These little vignettes are wonderful tales by themselves, and they made the book excellent for me.
