I've often heard what an important work this collection of (loosely) interconnected short stories is; now I've discovered that it's also a real pleasure to read, very engaging, funny, and moving without ever becoming merely sarcastic or maudlin.
After quickly adapting to the faintly unfamiliar idioms of the author and his characters (Anderson was American, like me, but "Winesburg, Ohio" was originally published in 1919), it became more and more clear to me that here is an early example of (if not a singular, major influence on) what I love in more contemporary masters of the short story craft like Alice Munro and Lorrie Moore (and possibly Miranda July): those universal human experiences of hope and failure and love and death channeled through interesting particulars, in this case the particulars of Life and lives in an American Midwestern town at the turn of the last century. There is a dedication to detail--a loving attention to private moments and the touching clumsiness in really knowing ourselves and others that is our lot as human beings--that make this book indispensable for the devotee of the literary short story.

Je le recommanderais à n'importe qui, mais en particulier à ceux qui ont aimé "The Blind Assassin" de Margaret Atwood parce que c'est un roman, comme celui de Mme Atwood, qui appartient en partie à "La Science-fiction" en même temps qu'il a plusieurs dimensions très humanistes, politiques, et ravissantement littéraires. Pour moi, Aamin Malouf est une grande découverte!

We read the two parts of this (en français) over FRE301-302, and then I took a class wherein we read a lot of other Némirovsky novels. Suite française is definitely the must-read of the bunch, though. We had a lot of discussions about the tragic history behind the writing of it, and about Némirovsky's ambivalent and troubling view of her own Jewish heritage, especially in the context of the extremely disturbing moment in history during which she was writing.... Anyway, I hope you find it as rich and interesting as we did, and that you're doing well in general!
