The unattractive, orphaned girl so poor she becomes a governess for a stuffy, mean, older man who himself doesn't have all that much money ...

Actually, Mr. Rochester was filthy rich. At least 2 estates in England alone, mention of at least 1 property on the continent, allusion to his being landlord of a large area, any fortune inherited from his family, the fortune that came from his first marriage, and interest and income from said properties and fortunes. (Bear in mind twenty thousand pounds divided equally amongst 4 cousins was fortune enough to secure them for life at the time of the novel.) If you're assuming from the rumors that were sent to Miss Ingram, Mr. Rochester made those up because he knew what she was really after.

Jane Eyre is one of my all-time favorite books. Apples and oranges to P&P, though.

I do also believe that lizzie doesn't love darcy. SHe thinks highly of herself, ...

The whole point is that both characters had very grievous character-flaws at the beginning of the novel, but, because of each other, recognized where they were wrong and corrected themselves. One of the nice things about love - it can make us better people. But also, both had the strength of character to admit they were wrong - something that earns my esteem. Most people are too stubborn and proud to recognize error, let alone change their character.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. But I think the more valuable aspect of the book is the subtle sarcasm and social commentary that runs quietly beneath the surface of the story. Made me laugh.
