Plenty of times as I've turned the last few pages of a book, I've cried. Sometimes the book came to a stunning conclusion - characters finding love, plot twists of crushing loss. I've never cried because a book spoke so deeply to my soul, as if were a teletype for my spiritual wanderings. Until tonight, as I finally turned the last pages of this book.
I picked this book up at a used bookstore over two years ago. It was the kind of book I *wanted* to read, but didn't have the soulspace to engage. I wasn't ready for it. About a month ago, I started reading it again, and soon found I could only read a few pages at a time. I found myself wanting to circle and highlight portions, but I resisted. Instead, I found some stickie page markers and simply stuck one in each time something struck me. There are many, many, many pages marked in this little tome. It took me awhile to get through it, sometimes only a few pages a night, as I absorbed Wilkes' journey, as his wanderings reflected my wanderings, his hopes, my hopes. This book has been a gift for my soul.
Tonight I finished it, and I cried. I think maybe I'll miss it, a little, the wisdom guiding me each night. I'm looking forward to going back through it over the next few weeks before Advent, reviewing those 'a-ha' notes marked with bright stickies. I'm awfully glad I read this book.
