Read this because I really enjoyed Street Magic by the same author. There were parts of this book that were great, but the flaws in the main character just became annoying after awhile. I felt like I was being strong-armed into caring for her (SEE WHY SHE'S SO HURT? STRONG YET VULNERABLE? CONFLICTED? A BITCH WITH A HEART?) I felt like the author was hitting me with the so-called insight into the character. I also felt that the romantic storyline developed too fast - lust I could get, and with Kittredge's graphic descriptions, it made sense for it to be about (literally) animal lust... The 'romance' part just didn't fall in with Luna's MO...

This is the first book in a series, but I'm not inclined to continue with the next book anytime soon.

I grabbed this book because the cover had a blurb from Neil Gaiman saying "Pretty much perfect." The beginning was a little strange for me... I didn't quite get into it but I kept at it and found it to be a REALLY wonderful book. I'm not much into vampire fiction, but toward the end I thought, "This is what I wished Twilight would have been." It's almost like a Twilight for grown-ups. The prose is finely crafted but at times I was overwhelmed by its sheer volume. Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Neil Gaiman or Jim Butcher, likes alternate worlds, or perhaps wants a Twilight-esque saga with a bit more maturity.

I'll definitely be checking out more books by McKinley (and I almost wouldn't mind a sequel to this book, or at least another set in the same world.)

Plenty of times as I've turned the last few pages of a book, I've cried. Sometimes the book came to a stunning conclusion - characters finding love, plot twists of crushing loss. I've never cried because a book spoke so deeply to my soul, as if were a teletype for my spiritual wanderings. Until tonight, as I finally turned the last pages of this book.

I picked this book up at a used bookstore over two years ago. It was the kind of book I *wanted* to read, but didn't have the soulspace to engage. I wasn't ready for it. About a month ago, I started reading it again, and soon found I could only read a few pages at a time. I found myself wanting to circle and highlight portions, but I resisted. Instead, I found some stickie page markers and simply stuck one in each time something struck me. There are many, many, many pages marked in this little tome. It took me awhile to get through it, sometimes only a few pages a night, as I absorbed Wilkes' journey, as his wanderings reflected my wanderings, his hopes, my hopes. This book has been a gift for my soul.

Tonight I finished it, and I cried. I think maybe I'll miss it, a little, the wisdom guiding me each night. I'm looking forward to going back through it over the next few weeks before Advent, reviewing those 'a-ha' notes marked with bright stickies. I'm awfully glad I read this book.
