Perhaps more than just "Starship Troopers" meets "Ender's Game".

You shouldn't waste your time reading media tie-ins (in theory), but Fall of Reach is actually better in some ways than the books it imitates.

A particular surprise was the naval battles

Defining "Epic Fantasy" was not enough for Tolkien.
With the Children of Hurin, he defined "Grimdark".

I'm mostly joking, but the idea that incest and character vunerablility was fresh when Game of Thrones began in 1996 is looking more and more unlikel

A really great plot. This one really gets to the heart of what War40k is all about.
The theme of this book is lies. Lies with good intentions. Lies that unintentionally damn all of humanity to an endless nightmare of repeated mistakes on a galactic s

First novel syndrome alert.

Bear has a cool idea: an entire planet's culture is based around what they can read of massive obelisks on which is written the complete history and sum of humanity's knowledge.

Interesting questions arise.

Very informing, if somewhat demanding book.
I would have liked more on colour theory and harmony, but as a historical travelogue about the craft of mixing colours from raw ingredients - something we take for granted these days - I can't imagine a mor

A Classic but not a Masterpiece...if that makes sense.

The plot is practically non existent, the prose is unexciting, the two narrative threads take forever to converge ( over 2/3rds of the book), and the scope of the story is rather limited for a chu

Probably Howard's best novel - maybe even better than the Hour of the Dragon.

Despite not being a tale of Conan, everything feels so much like a Conan story it is a shame most fans are unfamiliar with Almuric.

I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.
“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”
Jorge Luis Borges

Ray Bradbury
“The books are to remind us what asses and fool we are. They're Caeser's praetorian guard, whispering as the parade roars down the avenue, "Remember, Caeser, thou art mortal." Most of us can't rush around, talking to everyone, know all the cities of the world, we haven't time, money or that many friends. The things you're looking for, Montag, are in the world, but the only way the average chap will ever see ninety-nine per cent of them is in a book. Don't ask for guarantees. And don't look to be saved in any one thing, person, machine, or library. Do your own bit of saving, and if you drown, at least die knowing you were headed for shore.”
Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

“Talent hits a target no one else can hit. Genius hits a target no one else can see.”
Arthur Schopenhauer
