picked up this book after seeing the commercial. the gimmick is that this is supposed to be the book written by the character of the TV show and there is no suggestion in the book that it was ghost written. I

expected it to be a low quality book, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it to be moderately to well written. it is, of course, exactly like an episode of the TV show both in the setup, character interactions and resolution. it is full of the same smart-aleck comments and has a 1:1 character matchup (though names are changed to preserve the anonymity of the TV show characters). it's a quick read, but enjoyable.

hilarious collection of essays. not as funny as "me talk pretty," in fact most essay are rather poignant. nevertheless, a great (and very quick!) read.

Interesting premise for a book. Read it after finding out the TV show was based on a book. Turns out to be much different than the TV show and not generally in a good way. I found two major problems with the book:

1. Sawyer gets bogged down with long explanations of physics which he tries to twist to fit the story. Instead of complimenting the story and appealing to the science minded, it was confusing and almost seemed to be written by a different author.

2. I also found the gap between the flash forwards to be too long. In this case I think the TV show does it better with a 9 month, rather than 21 year gap. Too long, too awkward.

the lost symbol is a typical dan brown book; gripping introduction, boring middle section, return to excitement at the 3/4 mark and an abrupt and totally unsatisfying ending. the lost symbol adds a new component to this formula however: a boring and nearly pointless epilogue.

don't get me wrong, i enjoyed this book. langdon's inclusion of washington dc locations was fun and interesting to someone who has spent a bit of time in our nation's capitol.

i recommend this book as an interesting vacation book; just don't expect Hemingway.
