"I read and enjoyed the (edited) version of this in high school. This came up in Audible's $5 sale and I wanted to hear the full version. Such an interesting and sad story - although I'm not sure sad is the right word for it. Lots of ethical dilemm..." Read more of this review »

I was really looking for a light summer read and the cover really sold me. What I got was a simple boring story. I'm not really sure why I finished it except to simply see how it ended. Predictable. There was no real depth in these characters.

I was inspired to read this book after watching, "Saving Mr. Banks" with the family last week. I really don't watch any TV to speak of and rarely watch a movie, but I admit this is one of the best movies I have seen in awhile. I remember watching the ...more

“Like all failed experiments, that one taught me something I didn’t expect: one key ingredient of so-called experience is the delusional faith that it is unique and special, that those included in it are privileged and those excluded from it are missing out.”
Jennifer Egan, A Visit from the Goon Squad

“The terrible things that happen to us in this life never make any sense when we’re in the middle of them, floundering, no end in sight.”
Adriana Trigiani, Big Stone Gap

Bill Bryson
“My particular dread--the vivid possibility that left me staring at tree shadows on the bedroom ceiling night after night--was having to lie in a small tent, alone in an inky wilderness, listening to a foraging bear outside and wondering what its intentions were. I was especially riveted by an amateur photograph in Herrero's book, taken late at night by a camper with a flash at a campground out West. The photograph caught four black bears as they puzzled over a suspended food bag. The bears were clearly startled but not remotely alarmed by the flash. It was not the size or demeanor of the bears that troubled me--they looked almost comically nonaggressive, like four guys who had gotten a Frisbee caught up a tree--but their numbers. Up to that moment it had not occurred to me that bears might prowl in parties. What on earth would I do if four bears came into my camp? Why, I would die, of course. Literally shit myself lifeless. I would blow my sphincter out my backside like one of those unrolling paper streamers you get at children's parties--I daresay it would even give a merry toot--and bleed to a messy death in my sleeping bag.”
Bill Bryson, A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail
