To say I thoroughly enjoyed this book is not exactly accurate. Reading about the author's unconventional, trial-filled and just-plain-HARD childhood was, at best, uncomfortable. At times, it was horrifying.

Although the whole family stayed together until the author and her siblings were old enough to leave home, her parents can't really be credited for getting them there. Both brilliant in their own rights, they were much more concerned with striking it rich and following their own twisted paths than things like, say, eating. The kids had to grow up quickly and learn how to fend for themselves, and the traits in their parents that used to seem charming, eccentric and adventurous quickly became tiresome and infuriating.

The very best part about this memoir is that Walls does what very, very few memoir authors do: She presents the facts and lets you decide how you're going to feel about them. There are no multi-page laments about how awful and horrible her life was, how her parents failed her and her siblings, how put-upon she felt. This was her life. This is how it happened. We're left to decide how it makes us feel. And as a result, the subject matter resonates much, much more.
