<about>I had just begun keeping a reading diary when I came across a mention of the "goodreads" concept on a website. It was exactly what I was looking for in my reading diary: a way to remember which books I have read and when I read them. And provide a place to record my thoughts on each book. I had in no way intended to find a source of never-ending literary trivia, but I like it nevertheless.</about>

The title and the combative language have a lot in common with the shock tactics of PETA, I think. It is an attention grabber. But do the ends justify the means? The hardcore among us would say to get the message out there by any means necessary, but inwardly still cringe at using naked women to get people to think about cruelty. Objectify an animal or objectify a woman? Or exploit the "diet" obsessed culture that is always looking for the next new thing to talk about vegan stuff?

But going back to the title, try to imagine the buzz this book would have generated if it was called "Vegan Woman." People would walk to the other side of the bookstore to get away from that book. But they are intrigued by a nasty, emaciated woman. "Why is she so nasty? How did she achieve such a stunning lack of cellulite?" Marketing is not always pretty, but sometimes your product goes unnoticed without it.

Loved this book. It shattered my mind. A buddy of mine who was born in Columbia and grew up in Venezuela used to say stuff like this back in university and I wrote it off as paranoid, but now having read this book and The Shock Doctrine (and others), I realize that reality and paranoia are interchangeable functions in the New World Order. The truth is always much worse than I thought.

Loved your review! It brought back fond memories of loving this book when I read it in Grade 13 English class. I remember savouring their intense suspicion of the "USAmericans" and then the delicious irony that the people they suspected of being American turned out to be Canadians, who assumed THEY were American. Hilarious! My English teacher always referred to the author as "Ole Peg" and I have never been disappointed in any of her novels.
