I really wanted to love this book. It has all the elements I enjoy in a good read -- a rich and obscure chapter of American history and a compelling cast of characters who, as they say, couldn't be made up. Larson moves back and forth between two narratives -- the creation of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and the sordid tale of serial killer H.H. Holmes. Larson has a novelist's sense of pace and an evocative eye for detail. But the book projects a satisfying conclusion that never materializes. Larson tries hard to conjure a Hollywood thriller that's "stranger than fiction." But after all the build up, the end is -- perhaps inevitably -- a let down. ]]>
