I can't say that this was a life-changing book for me. Evidently, it is a sequel Durable Goods , but that wasn't plain before I started reading. Once I finished, though, I can tell that there was plainly a piece of the story missing that might have made this plot feel more complete. As it stands, as a story alone, I didn't feel that there was a true beginning-middle-end that I expected.

However, that does not mean that there was nothing positive about the book. I thought there were plenty of pleasant and even comical representations of a tween trying hard to understand the place in life that she was coming to hold. It was pleasant reading, but not totally satisfying.

Oh, boy. I was really worried when I first started this book. I thought, "how can I actually comprehend what's going on in a financial mystery?". As it turns out, the financial mystery was only fraction of the story and only one of the mysteries going on here. Once I got past the first 50 pages or so, and "the girl" shows up, I was locked into the story. I really enjoyed the way those plots wove into each other and, after a bit, didn't even get tripped up by all the Swedish names.

I tend to forget, because I read to damned many murder mysteries, just how complex are the characters that Dennis Lehane creates. As is so important to my attention span and enjoyment of the book, I like the heroes of the story and can imagine a full life surrounding them. Like other Lehane stories, it contains a fair mix of gray mixed in with the black-and-white of right and wrong. Sometimes I don't want to get too keep into the mess that is humanity, but Dennis Lehane does finally show that good and fair has as much of a place as evil, misadventure, and sorrow.

I don't love every Anne Tyler book that comes out. In fact, there are more that I don't like than I do. This book falls into the ones that I like, but not love. It is an interesting read of family life--one that looks so wonderful when looking at it from the outside. But, from the inside, there is hesitation, questioning, and concern.
