Jonfaith made a comment on Darwin8u’s review of The Force
The Force by Don Winslow
" We viewed the Richard Price teleplay The Night Of last weekend and I thought I wish there was a Balzac of our city streets. "

The Force by Don Winslow
""The Fire THIS time."

description

This would have probaly just been another very good cop thriller without Don Winslow's race nuance (sometimes clunky, sometimes heavy-handed) and the novel's final act. Overall, 'The Force' is not as good as his Cartel series..." Read more of this review »

Jonfaith and 17 other people liked Vit Babenco's review of The Selected Poems:
The Selected Poems by Osip Mandelstam
"“Sleeplessness. Homer. Taut sails.
I have counted half the catalogue of ships:
That caravan of cranes, that expansive host,
Which once rose above Hellas.

Antiquity and modernity, ancient times and nowadays – in a single stanza Osip Mandelstam establi..." Read more of this review »
Jonfaith and 10 other people liked Isidora's review of Il pianista muto:
Il pianista muto by Paola Capriolo
"I don't get the low ratings the book has got on GR. For me it was a very enjoyable novel. A young man is found at the beach, unable to speak. The nurse who found him works at the near-by mental clinic. The young man (pianist, as the reader would d..." Read more of this review »

Risking banishment from Mother Rus' literary revival tent, I had problems with this novel, which was principally a farce. It forms a pairing with Uncle's Dream and I find both wanting when considering The Eternal Husband.

Considering its comedic trap

Julio Cortázar
“I realized that searching was my symbol, the emblem of those who go out at night with nothing in mind, the motives of a destroyer of compasses.”
Julio Cortázar

Charles Darwin
“If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.”
Charles Darwin, Voyage of the Beagle

Bertolt Brecht
“Art is not a mirror held up to reality
but a hammer with which to shape it.”
Bertolt Brecht

Thomas Wolfe
“Each of us is all the sums he has not counted: subtract us into the nakedness and night again, and you shall see begin in Crete four thousand years ago the love that ended yesterday in Texas.”
Thomas Wolfe, Look Homeward, Angel

Zadie Smith
“But the problem with readers, the idea we're given of reading is that the model of a reader is the person watching a film, or watching television. So the greatest principle is, "I should sit here and I should be entertained." And the more classical model, which has been completely taken away, is the idea of a reader as an amateur musician. An amateur musician who sits at the piano, has a piece of music, which is the work, made by somebody they don't know, who they probably couldn't comprehend entirely, and they have to use their skills to play this piece of music. The greater the skill, the greater the gift that you give the artist and that the artist gives you. That's the incredibly unfashionable idea of reading. And yet when you practice reading, and you work at a text, it can only give you what you put into it. It's an old moral, but it's completely true.”
Zadie Smith
