This story could have been told in half the words (if not fewer). It feels like Simmons was trying too hard to emulate the paid-by-the-word rambling Victorian style, rambling all over the place, re-hashing the same sentiments from the same characters over again, and never quite going anywhere. And the whole "it might have all been a bunch of hallucinations" ending made me regret those hours of my life I won't get back.
