How did I take so long to read this book? Probably because everything I knew about Malcolm X was wrong and made the prospect of reading about him completely unpalatable. Granted, I disagree with much of his thought--especially his early thought--but now I wish I could have met him. We would have argued, sure, but we would also have agreed about many of the fundamental problems of the USA.

My eyes were wide open the entire time I was reading Haley's effortless prose, which guides the reader through Malcolm X's life in Michigan, prison, Harlem, Mecca, parts of Africa, and through the minds of prominent leaders and less-prominent hustlers. Although everyone know how the story ended, this book is surprising in that it's one of the most inspiring and hopeful books I've ever read--and not the phony hope of certain politicians' campaigns. I guess it's only when you truly embrace cynicism that you can eventually find hope. I wanted to reread this book the moment I finished, but instead I'll let someone else have the experience.

This book is in my Top 5 of all time.

Oh yeah, I'm a white guy from Tennessee.

Before reading this, I knew very little about Malcolm X. I knew very little about the black-revolution of the 50's and 60's peroid. I was like Chris Rock says in one of his stand-up acts: when it comes to black history, the only answer I knew to anything was "Martin Luther King".

But not only is this book an eye-opening account of the racial divide of that time, it's an open and honest look at an absolutely amazing man who rose from poverty and crime, only to turn his life around in prison due to Islam. His story was sooooooo interesting, it's an absolute shame that he was murdered just as he was beginning to see that his long-preached white-hatred was just as wrong as racism towards blacks.

I'm really tired and starting to feel lazy so I won't ramble on much more, but in short, this is one of the best books I have ever read, and should be required reading in schools when discussing the Civil Rights movement. It's books like this and Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States that should be given to high schoolers rather than the uninformative bare-bones textbooks they use now.

Spike Lee said "This is the most important book I have ever read."

I agree 100%(less)

This book has received an inordinate amount of praise, and some of it I take issue with, but some of it is completely fair. I rate this book highly mainly because I'm a walker and a New Yorker, and one of my favorite things is walking around the city. O'Neill's descriptions are perfect and will inspire you to visit the sites and sounds on these pages.
