Just the way I've seen the business evolve over the years.
But it's just common sense and the way the business works: Books are published when a publisher knows there's a market - a "demand" - for the genre, or can create one. The NUMBER of books depends on the size of the market.
More titles of a particular book are published when the demand is greater.
Book stores, though, primarily deal with publishers who have a "return policy." If they don't sell all the books they order, the book stores can return them for a refund.
In essence, they're taking them on consignment.
I can't point you to one particular article or source, this is just stuff I've learned over all these years. But there's plenty of information out there if you really want to dig into it.
