I read chapters 1-30 in Latin, the rest I read in English translation. The commentary in the back is absolutely no help with any grammar questions -- it is all literary and historical commentary. The vocabulary index, however, is thorough.

Despite the cheesey name, I found this book very helpful and poignant. Keller has a gift for both contextualizing and personalizing scripture. I read this very slowly throughout the year.

“The ability to "fantasize" is the ability to survive. It's wonderful to speak about this subject because there have been so many wrong-headed people dealing with it.... The so-called realists are trying to drive us insane, and I refuse to be driven insane.... We survive by fantasizing. Take that away from us and the whole damned human race goes down the drain.”
Ray Bradbury

Flannery O'Connor
“But learned people can analyze for me why I fear hell and their implication is that there is no hell. But I believe in hell. Hell seems a great deal more feasible to my weak mind than heaven. No doubt because hell is a more earth-seeming thing. I can fancy the tortures of the damned but I cannot imagine the disembodied souls hanging in a crystal for all eternity praising God.”
Flannery O'Connor, A Prayer Journal

Sven Birkerts
“Everything in contemporary society discourages interiority. More and more of our exchanges take place via circuits, and in their very nature those interactions are such as to keep us hovering in the virtual now, a place away from ourselves.”
Sven Birkerts, The Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age

Flannery O'Connor
“Dear God, I don’t want to have invented my faith to satisfy my weakness. I don’t want to have created God to my own image as they’re so fond of saying. Please give me the necessary grace, oh Lord, and please don’t let it be as hard to get as Kafka made it.”
Flannery O'Connor, A Prayer Journal

C.S. Lewis
“Emeth speaking of Aslan, "Beloved, said the Glorious One, unless thy desire had been for me thou wouldst not have sought so long and so truly. For all find what they truly seek...And since then, O Kings and Ladies, I have been wandering to find him and my happiness is so great that it even weakens me like a wound. And this is the marvel of marvels, that he called me Beloved, me who am but as a dog”
C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle

Jeanette Winterson
“The curious are always in some danger. If you are curious you might never come home, like all the men who now live with mermaids at the bottom of the sea.

Or the people who found Atlantis.”
Jeanette Winterson, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
