Don't be so surprised. THis is nothing new. If you google vampire and movies, you'll get tons of movies that have been made, from the earliest 1900's until Twilight. And books? Good grief!

The latest big upsurge is shifters. Not just werewolves, but ferrets, foxes, seals, you name it. It's really hot right now in the ebook world.

Thank God, cuz my werewolf series THe McCallan Legacy, McCallan's Blood, part 1, is doing very well.

As for Twilight. Bella is not someone I want my daughter to use as a role model. Ugh! If Bella was my girl, I'd hope she'd realize there's no future in not only Edward, but any high school age boy. I hope she's smart enough to avoid that broody, bad boy/loser and finish planning her college career.

But, as parents, we can but dream....

I'm published with 3 publishers. For me, writing is a love, from the heart, but it's also a business.
I treat it as such.
I work full time and then come home to my part-time job - writing - 20-26 hrs a week.
My kids (teens) are old enough to fend for themselves, and my husband does a lot of the cooking and laundry. The cleaning? Well, once a week, everyone pitches in for an hour and we tidy up. (pick up the big chunky bits, vacuum and sweep up dog hair). The kids do the dishes every night, and keep their rooms up.
Because I look at it as a business (job) so do they and they treat it as such. So does my husband, esp. when the checks roll in and I'm taking everyone on vacations.
How you treat your writing time, whether it's "whenever" or something "sacred" is up to you, but how you see it is how others will see it.
That includes the times I'm in chats on loops, doing promos - I'm at work, just at home.
It's the only way I can produce the number of books I do each year.
Lynn

So you've written your novel.
Now comes the hard part.
Editing.

It's a pain in the ass, but it has to be done and at least you recognize that, so you're worlds ahead of others.

If you take it systematically and slow - you can do it yourself, to an extent. When I edit, I make at least 4 passes, each time concentrating on a different writing bad habit.

One pass might be to check every verb - is it the best word I could use, does it describe what I'm trying to convey to perfection? Then I either keep it or replace it. ex... he walked across the room....
he stalked, strode, hopped, flittered.... you get the idea.

Another is to check for info dumps. Usually this is a first time writer's biggest problem. THey're easy to spot - large paragraphs of "backstory" - what happend in the character(s) past - dumped on the unsuspecting reader and burying them in information they really don't need. Find it and cut it out. Put it in another file called Backstory and only use it sparingly.

I check for tense agreement. He put it in his pocket...He'd put it in his pocket, if I'm talking about something that happened in the past.

Another thing is too much description - If you're describing something and it takes more than say 3 sentences, you'll bore the reader, esp. in a fantasy/romance. Pacing is everything.

Once you've done a few of those passes, and fixed your grammar and spelling, you're well on your way to being done.

But, honestly, editing never ends, you just have to stop when the book is published.
