Houston TX in the 80's, awash in oil and corruption. It's the story of Jay Porter, a barely getting by attorney and veteran of the Black Power movement of the 60's and 70's. Jay gets caught up in a maze of corruption and power brokering and because he is still scarred from a personal trauma during the civil rights era, he does not respond the mess he finds himself in as many people might.

I liked this book pretty well; there is good character development of the protagonist and a few other key players, though other characters are occasionally one dimensional, like props. The author is a good story teller and this one moves quickly from the opening pages.

Overall, the book goes too deep in certain places (like the protagonist's background done in flashback) and too shallow in others (the characters in the here and now) so it both resolves too much and too little in the end. Not as satisfying as it could have, and should have been.

Worth the read though, particularly if you are a fan of Dennis Lehane and his ilk.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Despite the fact that it was recommended to me by several people with good taste in books, I had low expectations.

It was a fast paced, well written fantasy book. I liked it enough to read the next one in the series.

A surprisingly even handed journalistic report from a Brown undergraduate who transfers to Jerry Falwell's Liberty University for a semester. Funny, well-written, occasionally insightful.
